From Crisis to Innovation – How the Pandemic will boost the Future of Project Management
While various future-defining technologies such as predictive analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Big Data, have been adopted already in many organizations and industries over the last years and are still on the rise, there has been little progress to adopt such technologies in the project management practice, although project managers have to cope with an increasing information load and resulting in higher complexities, leading to project inefficiencies and often project failures. The slow progress to leverage such technologies in project management is largely based on arguments that the project management practice is a very human-driven discipline and cannot be driven by nor depend on technology. In some cases, predictions were made that it still would take approx. 10 years before AI-powered project management would become a reality.
The impact and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis has taught us a lesson not only that organizations are actually able to cope with such sudden and drastic challenges operationally and can quickly adapt to new circumstances, but also how important technology has become for the project economy. Although such crisis scenario never has been really put to the test before, most organizations were able to quickly adapt with the use of modern and advanced technology.
As a result, the pandemic and the lessons we can learn from it provides an opportunity to further drive the project economy and reinvent project management – to adopt a project culture that truly acknowledges and takes full advantage of the value of technology. The impact of COVID-19 has shown us that technology has an increasing and critical stake in the operational levels of projects, and project professionals need to be equipped with novel tools to react faster to changes in a more and more fast-moving world.
